Doctor Whitsett

JEFFREY C. WHITSETT, M.D.
Jeffrey C. Whitsett, M.D., founded the Whitsett Vision Group almost two decades ago. Today, the practice has grown to include Cybele C. Woon M.D. and David C. Fu O.D. As the Whitsett Vision Group has evolved, Dr. Whitsett has garnered a reputation in Houston and in the U.S. as a state-of-the-art eye surgeon. When national companies and the FDA need assistance developing new services Dr. Whitsett is the one they call. He is currently involved in several FDA patient trials – and was hand-selected by the FDA to perform patient trials for LASIK and ReSTOR.

Jeffrey C. Whitsett, M.D., is a nationally-renown doctor specializing in refractive, cataract and glaucoma surgery. He lectures across the country to fellow ophthalmologists about the newest, most innovative advances in cataract and refractive surgery.

Dr. Whitsett received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1986 and then moved to Phoenix, Arizona to complete his internship at Good Samaritan Medical Center. After completing his residency at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute in 1990, he accepted a fellowship in glaucoma at The University of Texas-Houston in affiliation with Houston Eye Associates.

A certified physician with the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Whitsett is also a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has served on the Practicing Ophthalmologists Advisory Committee on Education of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

His wife, Mary Ann, is a physician specializing in Occupational Medicine. They have four children – Cory, Christin, Mary Claire and Catherine. Dr. Whitsett is becoming well-known as the father of Cory, the golf prodigy who was one of the youngest to ever win the National Junior Amateur (also won by Tiger Woods as a youth).

Dr. Whitsett enjoys golf, too, and basketball (he received a basketball scholarship in college). However, the majority of his free time he tries to keep up with his parental duties.

CYBELE C. WOON, M.D.
Cybele C. Woon, M.D., is a board certified ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in neuro-ophthalmology. She received her fellowship training in the neuro-ophthalmology field from the respected Rosa Tang, M.D., at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She is experienced in medical retina care and most recently has received special training in BOTOX ® and JUVEDERM ™ injections.

Cybele C. Woon, M.D., joined the Whitsett Vision Group after serving in private practice for five years with the Columbus Eye Associates in Columbus, Texas. Her initial medical practice was as an associate of Charles Garcia, M.D., from 1995 to 1997.

American-born, she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biochemistry from The University of Texas in Austin in 1986. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1990 from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Woon served a one-year internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston. She then completed her residency under Chairman Richard Ruiz, M.D. at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. In 1994, Dr. Woon did a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology with Rosa Tang, M.D. through UTMB-Galveston.

She is a member of the Houston Ophthalmology Society, the Texas  Ophthalmologic Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.

She is married to Jason Pickel, and is the proud parent of daughter Regan and son Kai. When she is not practicing medicine or being a mother, Dr. Woon enjoys weight training, walking her dogs, and playing the piano.

Dr. Woon is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.


David Fu

DAVID C. FU, O.D.
David C. Fu, O.D., a Houston native, obtained his Doctor of Optometry Degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2007. In addition to being a Therapeutic Optometrist, he has earned his Optometric Glaucoma Specialist title. He has special training in contact lens fittings and cataract/refractive surgery patient management.

David C. Fu, O.D., began his career as a Registered Respiratory Therapist before transitioning to optometry. After attending The University of Texas in Austin, he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree with academic honors (summa cum laude) from The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. In addition to making the Dean’s List, he received the Class of 1999 Respiratory Care Academic Achievement Award and Dorothy Banks Scholarship Award. He was also a member of the Lambda Beta Honor Society for the Profession of Respiratory Care.

While at the University of Houston College of Optometry in the mid-2000s, he gained advance knowledge of the latest vision equipment – the Zeiss OCT, GDx, Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph II, Humphrey Visual Field, Goldmann Tonometry and non-mydiatric fundus camera. He is well-versed as a corneal topographer. Corneal topography is utilized in LASIK patient evaluations.

In keeping with his academic excellence, while in optometry school Dr. Fu performed optometric externships at the Good Neighbor Eye Clinic and Bellaire Eye Consultants in Houston and the Richmond State School in Richmond. It was during his externship at the Whitsett Vision Group in 2007 that he caught Dr. Whitsett’s eye. He also completed an externship at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio with rotations in low vision rehabilitation and specialty contact lens fitting. Dr. Fu's training also included rotations in primary eye care, low vision rehabilitation, ocular diagnostics and specialty pediatric clinic at the College of Optometry.
