CustomVue® LASIK Eye Surgeon in Houston

Providing a New Level of Accuracy

CustomVue® LASIK makes use of Wavefront technology to achieve superior results to traditional laser eye surgery. Wavefront is an advanced technology that was originally developed to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space through high-powered telescopes. It didn’t take long for researchers to realize the value this technology could provide to laser eye surgery; clinical trials were successful and Wavefront technology gained FDA approval in 2005.

Wavefront technology enables our Houston eye surgeons to analyze a person’s entire visual system and create a precise, 3-dimensional map of each eye. This customized LASIK treatment enables us to achieve exceptional results for every individual; it not only helps treat nearsighted and farsighted individuals, but those with mixed astigmatism as well.

The Whitsett Vision Group has a sophisticated piece of diagnostic equipment called the WaveScan. The WaveScan utilizes Wavefront technology to identify and measure imperfections in an individual’s eye—and is up to 25 times more precise than conventional LASIK!

The WaveScan’s data – which is contained in a report called the Wave Print – is then transferred to the VISX Star S4™ laser in Dr. Whitsett’s surgery center. Studies show that CustomVue® Wavefront LASIK increases the possibility that more individuals will have better than 20/20 vision after surgery.

Before Wavefront, LASIK surgeons relied on “sphere” and “cylinder” measurements. This precision was limited to 0.25 diopter steps. With WaveScan, sphere and cylinder are measured to the hundredths of a diopter. Technically, no two individuals’ eyes are exactly alike. Without CustomVue®, thousands of individuals could have the same prescription based on the 0.25 diopter steps. The WaveScan’s “fingerprint” is unique to each individual—and produces results that are tailored to the individual needs of each eye.

Not all individuals are candidates for LASIK eye surgery. When you come to our office, you will receive an in-depth consultation with one of our experienced Houston LASIK eye surgeons. During your consultation, we will not only discuss the goals you have for your vision and go over your medical history, but also review and interpret your Wave Print to determine if you are a good candidate for CustomVue® LASIK or another procedure. Generally, patients with higher-order aberrations that make up 20 percent of the total aberrations of their eyes make better CustomVue® LASIK patients.
