Am I a Candidicate for Laser Vision Correction?

Although teenagers are becoming increasingly interested in LASIK, a good candidate must be at least 19 years old (and preferably 21) so that the eyes and vision will have matured sufficiently to benefit from laser vision correction. There is no age limit for having LASIK. However, if you are over 60 years old, you should be free of cataracts. Having had cataract surgery does not necessarily exclude one from being a LASIK candidate.

Other critical criteria include:

Certain medical conditions such as keratoconous and lupus (as well as other auto-immune related diseases) may affect candidacy. Diabetes depends on factors that Dr. Whitsett will evaluate directly. Women who are pregnant (or nursing) should wait at least four months post-partum before undergoing LASIK.

Custom Vue ® LASIK candidacy is very similar, except the minimum age is 21, and severe allergies and significant dry eye unresponsive to treatment may also affect candidacy.

Individuals who have previously experienced Radial Keratotomy (RK) can often times benefit from LASIK.

With recent advancements, more individuals than ever can qualify for laser vision correction – and other procedures such as the Visian ICL for very nearsighted persons. If you would like to know if you are a candidate, take advantage of our complimentary consultation.
