LASIK laser vision correction is designed to correct refractive
errors, specifically nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness
(hyperopia) and/or astigmatism. Each error affects the way
light rays are focused on the retina. LASIK reshapes the
cornea to correct these errors.
Although
teenagers are becoming increasingly interested in LASIK,
a good candidate must be at 19 years of age (and preferably
21) so that the eyes "and vision" will have matured
sufficiently to benefit from laser vision correction.
Other critical criteria include:
- A stable vision prescription for approximately one year
- Good overall eye health
- No signs of glaucoma or cataracts
Individuals who have previously had Radial Keratotomy (RK)
can often times benefit from LASIK.
Certain medical conditions such as keratoconous and lupus
may affect candidacy. Diabetes depends on factors that Dr.
Whitsett will evaluate directly. Some physical conditions
such as pregnancy and certain medications can cause short-term
vision fluctuations. Women who are pregnant should wait
until at least four months post-partum before undergoing
LASIK.
There is no age limit for having laser vision correction.
However, if you are over 60 years old, you should be free
of cataracts. Having had cataract surgery does not necessarily
exclude one from being a LASIK candidate.
