Acrysof® Toric Single-Piece IOLs Treat Astigmatic Patients

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye. The lens picks up images then focuses them on the retina that sends images to your brain. A cataract is not a film over the eye, and neither diets nor lasers can correct it. A cataract requires removal and replacement of the lens. While eye injuries, certain diseases and even some medications can cause a clouding of the lens, 90 percent of the time it is due to natural aging.

Millions of Americans experience cataract surgery every year. Dr.Whitsett, a Texas cataract surgeon, makes a tiny incision in the eye and inserts an ultrasonic probe which breaks the cloudy lens into pieces. After removing the pieces, Dr. Whitsett implants an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).

There are a variety of IOLs available to meet the unique needs of specific eye conditions. Some of these IOLs we offer include:

  • AcrySof® Toric Single-Piece IOL

For patients with astigmatism, Dr. Whitsett recommends the AcrySof® Toric Single-Piece IOL. This is the only lens crafted entirely from AcrySof® acrylic – a soft, flexible material developed by Alcon, a nationally-known manufacturer. The AcrySof® Single-Piece IOL is designed to conform to the natural shape of the lens capsule which helps it stay stable and centered in the eye. The AcrySof® Single-Piece Toric IOL version can help correct astigmatism in cataract patients -- and provides significantly improved distance vision. As with monofocal cataract surgery, you may still require eyeglasses, contact lenses or additional surgery (LASIK, astigmatic keratotomy or limbal relaxing incisions).

  • ReSTOR® and TECNIS® Multifocal

Recent advancements approved by the FDA give cataract patients a new alternative to traditional monofocal lenses. ReSTOR® and TECNIS® Multifocal are two lenses that provide cataract patients near, intermediate and distance vision – with one lens. LASIK surgery may still be needed to correct astigmatism, but these lenses give a much wider visual range and lessen the need for glasses and contacts.
