FARSIGHTED AND/OR ASTIGMATIC INDIVIDUALS CAN NOW BENEFIT
FROM WAVEFRONT LASIK
Custom Wavefront technology - the most precise laser vision
correction measurement and treatment - is now available
to farsighted individuals with or without astigmatism.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently OK'd the
VISX CustomVue Hyperopia procedure as the first U.S. approved
wavefront-guided laser treatment for farsighted persons.
During the FDA trials, four times as many participants were
very satisfied with their night vision after the VISX CustomVue
procedure compared to their night vision before with glasses
or contacts.
LASIK laser treatment helps individuals who are nearsighted,
farsighted and/or astigmatism see clearly without glasses
or contacts by altering the shape of the cornea.
The FDA approval essentially means if an individual qualifies,
he or she can receive wavefront-guided LASIK regardless
of the type of refractive error. CustomVue for Myopia (farsightedness)
has been FDA approved since May, 2003.
Wavefront technology was originally developed for use in
high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing
distant objects in space. Its adaptation to laser vision
correction has incorporated detailed measuring of imperfections
in the eye. A sophisticated piece of diagnostic equipment
called the WaveScan identifies and measures imperfections
in an individual's eye 25 times more precisely than previous
methods. WaveScan permits LASIK surgeons to analyze a person's
entire visual system, not just the shape of the cornea.
With the FDA's approval, this WaveScan data - which is
contained in a report called the WavePrint - can now be
transferred to the VISX Star S4 laser for custom Wavefront-guided
LASIK to provide a new level of accuracy and precision.
Studies show the possibility will now exist for more individuals
to see better than 20/20 after LASIK surgery.
FDA clinical study data presented at the 2003 American Society
of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ACRS) revealed that
one year following Wavefront guided LASIK, 94% of the study
participants could see 20/20 or better: 74% could see 20/16
or better, and 27% could see 20/12.5 or better. Also. neariy
70 percent had either the same or better post-op vision
than their best visual acuity with glasses or contacts.
Additionally, four times as many participants were very
satisfied with their night vision compared to their night
vision with glasses or contacts. In the past. 20/20 was
considered the benchmark of good vision ... NOT ANYMORE!
The best way to describe the benefits of Wavefront-guided
LASIK is the comparison of buying a suit/dress "off
the rack' vs. having the garment custom made with a multitude
of personalized measurements for the best fit. A custom-fit
garment will most likely fit better.
