Because
more than 90 percent of the population over age 40 will
typically develop presbyopia (the need for reading glasses),
this is a major concern for baby boomers. In comparison,
30 percent of the population has some type of refractive
error - nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism
- that is treatable with LASIK surgery.
Wavefront-guided LASIK cannot cure presbyopia. Our only
solution as LASIK surgeons is to correct one eye for distance
and the other for near - also called monovision. However,
some individuals can tolerate this, and others may choose
to have their eyes corrected solely for their best distance
vision based on their lifestyles.
